The root of the Trojan War, which made Troy one of the most famous cities in history and, ultimately, destroyed it, began with three jealous goddesses. Eris, the goddess of Discord, was angry that she was not invited to the wedding of King Peleus and the sea-nymph Thetis. To have her revenge, she throws a golden apple into the banquet hall marked “For the Fairest.” Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera all wanted the apple, and thus, the title of “Fairest”, but the gods needed an unbiased judge. They selected the mortal Paris, prince of Troy, to be the judge. Each goddess promised the young man gifts, but he was swayed by Aphrodite, who promised him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris gave the apple to the goddess of love, who, in turn, gave Paris Helen...the queen of Sparta.
