According to ancient and medieval science, aether (also called the fifth element), is the material that fills the region of the universe above the earthly sphere. This theory was used to explain several natural phenomena, such as how light and gravity traveled. In the late 19th century, physicists postulated that aether permeated all space, providing a medium through which light could travel, even in a vacuum. The term means "pure, fresh air" or "clear sky". In Greek mythology, it was believed that aether was the pure essence that the gods breathed, filling the space where they lived, just as air was to mortals.
